Our Vision: Connecting Generations Through Creativity and Storytelling
At Awakening Arts, we believe in the transformative power of intergenerational connection. Our projects bring together young people and elders, creating opportunities to share stories, learn from one another, and celebrate the extraordinary in everyday life. This work not only enhances the well-being of elders—who benefit from social interaction, recognition of their achievements, and a sense of purpose—but also supports young people by deepening their understanding of history and heritage, and reinforcing key areas of the school curriculum.

For schools, our intergenerational work enriches the learning experience by bringing history and personal narratives to life. Elders provide firsthand accounts of historical events, local heritage, and cultural practices, offering students unique insights that go beyond textbooks. For care homes and day centers, our projects offer residents the chance to feel heard, valued, and actively engaged in their community, combating isolation and enhancing their emotional well-being. By working across generations, we build stronger, more compassionate communities where people of all ages can connect and grow.
Story Exchange
Story Exchange is a signature project of Awakening Arts, designed to foster meaningful connections between generations through the simple yet profound act of storytelling. In this project, elders and younger generations come together in a series of workshops where they share personal stories, reflect on memories, and engage in rich conversations.
The project celebrates the lives and experiences of elders, providing a platform for them to share their wisdom and life stories, while giving younger participants the opportunity to listen and learn. For the younger generation, Story Exchange offers a chance to develop empathy, learn about history from a personal perspective, and connect with their community’s heritage.
Each session is a collaboration, where creativity and conversation merge. The stories exchanged not only help preserve personal histories, but they also inspire participants to view the world—and each other—with greater understanding. Through Story Exchange, we’re creating a living bridge between the past and the present, ensuring that important stories are both heard and passed on to future generations.
This project will be ready to share in Autumn 2024! Watch this space.
