Our Work

At Awakening Arts, we are passionate about preserving and sharing the extraordinary stories of everyday people. Through our podcasts, films, and community projects, we capture the rich histories, local heritage, and diverse cultures of our participants. Whether it's an oral history project, an intergenerational workshop, or a creative arts endeavor, our work brings these stories to life for younger generations, fostering connection and understanding. We believe in the power of storytelling to build bridges between people, preserve memories, and celebrate the unique experiences that shape our communities.

Be Belonging

BE BELONGING is an inter-generational project that has brought together local elders and school children from Hebden Royd Primary School.

The children interviewed 5 elders over zoom and then the children worked with a local musician – Holly Marland – to create soundscapes to accompany these memoir monologues, resulting in these soundscape-memoir-songs. We hope you enjoy hearing these stories and that you learn something new about how children lived, played and learnt in the past.

Hippies of Hebden

The Hippies of Hebden is a film which explores the arrival of the hippies to Hebden Bridge. It creates a space for the perspectives of all who lived through that time. We hope it is a healing film, and a film that celebrates all the people who make this town an amazing place to live.

This film will be available online in Autumn 2024

Flock

Flock was an inspiring project created by Awakening Arts to nurture community connections during a time of isolation. This initiative brought people together through creativity, expression, and shared experiences, even when physical gatherings weren’t possible. By encouraging participants to express themselves and contribute to a collective artwork, Flock became a symbol of resilience and community spirit, fostering togetherness through art. This film will be uploaded soon...

Harmony Hub Radio

In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Awakening Arts launched Harmony Hub Radio to continue reaching and supporting elders in our community. Through this radio show, we provided an uplifting and creative outlet for isolated individuals, using music, poetry, and storytelling to foster connection and maintain engagement. Harmony Hub became a lifeline for many, keeping the spirit of community alive during a time of physical separation.
