What we are dreaming up next....
Stories from the Hills, Stories from the Mills

The Intergenerational/Orla History Project is a unique and inspiring initiative that connects young people with the lived experiences of older generations, uncovering the rich, often untold stories of our communities. Focusing on the historic mill towns, where white working-class families and South Asian immigrants have lived and worked side by side for decades, the project delves into the shared histories that have shaped these areas. Through meaningful conversations and personal storytelling, it reveals a diverse tapestry of history, highlighting stories that textbooks often overlook.

By fostering intergenerational dialogue, the project not only preserves invaluable personal histories but also helps younger participants develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Through these powerful interactions, young people gain insights into the resilience, adaptation, and connection that have defined both long-established residents and more recent arrivals. The project celebrates the rich heritage of the mill towns while bridging cultural and generational divides, fostering a sense of shared history and mutual respect.

These conversations create an educational experience that is as personal as it is transformative, encouraging curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking. Each story adds a unique thread to the fabric of our shared past, helping to build stronger connections across generations and backgrounds, and inspiring a greater appreciation of the diverse communities that shape our world.
